Many people do not know how far it has really come. The history and the growth of the news is the past that changed the future. News comes in all different shapes and forms today, but a century ago news was mainly transported by paper.
To start, the Freedom of the Press is so important in America that it is the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. In addition the people of the nation at this time were well educated and well read. This free press, educated society combined with the citizens’ desire to become involved within it meant there was more demand than ever for newspapers. These factors meant that the number of different newspapers in the United States increased from 31 in 1775 to 1,200 in 1835, with the number more than tripling between 1810 and 1835 (Document G).
The article “Why Don’t Teens Read For Pleasure Like They Use To?” by Jennifer Ludden, writes about teens not reading as much and why aren’t they reading. Ludden uses logos and people to show the drop-off reading among teens. The author utilize people and data to support the drop-off in reading amidst teens.

Today’s youth spend countless hours on the internet for various reasons. Whether it is for research purposes, indulging in social media, watching videos, or playing games, reading is involved in some shape or form. Regardless of the content, reading online gives children certain abilities, such as expanding their vocabulary, adapting to different wordings and writing styles, identifying errors, understanding the material, and identifying the importance of details/imagery in their writing, that they may or may not be getting from books. These are two of facts and statistics that logically prove Rich’s argument of the issues between online and print literacy. Rich was very effective throughout her article by talking about the issues of online and printed literacy. She talks about both the positives of the literacy’s. And negatives of both literacy’s. Rich shows her credibility throughout the article and is very creative is discussing the controversy.
The visual design is of different outlets where one can get news. It contains newspapers, a phone open to news, and a tablet open to news. The purpose of the image is to inform the reader how one has access to news in several ways, which can determine one’s stance on an issue if its shown in a positive or negative light. The image is effective, because it reminds the reader that news isn’t just limited to a newspaper. News can be accessed in several ways, so it’s important to note what he or she is reading.

The New York Sun was the first penny press published. It was soon followed by the Evening Transcript and the New York Herald. This new type of newspaper changed how the other newspaper were run. Papers before were taken up by mostly ads, and the articles could get out of hand quickly. Writers multiple times wrote direct pieces about other journalist that they believed weren’t as good, or didn’t agree with their opinion.
The reporters in the early 1900s had to be very detailed and descriptive in order for people to know what they were talking about. Today, we have televisions that broadcast all of the news stories. Many Americans sit in front of the TV every day for entertainment. Now we have everything we need right around us. The TV has a major impact on our society.
The media will pick and choose which topics to discuss according to the viewer’s ratings. The news media represent the news in a manner that will leave people coming back for more. Bias is defined as being prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. Americans experience some sort of bias every day, however, media bias is likely the most prevalent. Media can be biased towards liberals, conservatives, or any other political leaning. According to University of Oklahoma Professor, Keith Gaddie, the mainstream media mostly suffers from liberal bias - which is usually hostile toward conservative candidates and causes. Media bias can misinform, exaggerate truths, and cause confusion during voting season.

Everyone knows that reading is important, but have you ever asked yourself why is that so? Reading is one of the most beneficial and practical activities that a human being can do. Unfortunately it is a disappointment that people these days read less. As we know, books were the main source of entertainment centuries ago, but with the widespread of technological advances such as the cinema, television, internet, among others, many people left their books on the bookshelf.
