It is hard to say what exactly kick started the industrial revolution however, there are many elements that brought about the industrial revolution. The Industrial Revolution was able to kick start due to several factors. Investors investing in inventors, Thomas Newcomen's creation of the original steam engine and the ability to make the steam engine a very cheap product. Thomas Newcomen developed the steam engine in 1705 and by 1712, the steam engine was being used in mines and factories all over Europe, which later inspired other inventors to modify it or use the steam engine to create other inventions like the steam turbine. James Watt is an example of one of the people who modified and used Thomas Newcomen’s steam engine and created a much more efficient and powerful steam engine. He also ended up making it a much cheaper which made it a fairly common item within the industrial world. One outstanding example would be James Watt and his investor, Matthew Boulton. “With Matthew Boulton, Watt began manufacturing steam engines in 1774 at the Soho Engineering Works in Birmingham. The two men coined the term horsepower as a measure of the power of their machines.” Without Matthew Boulton, James Watt would just continue fixing other people’s steam engines that had broke down which was what he was doing prior to manufacturing steam engines alongside Matthew Boulton. Without the money from Matthew Boulton, James Watt would not be able to join Soho Engineering Works and expand his business.
