Have you ever compare different poems by using various elements and literary devices of poetry? It’s literally hard to compare and contrast in between various poems as if we need to think critically about each and every element of poetry. Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts (Poetry). Poet uses different literary devices, structure, sound in their poetry to express their feeling or to provide some meaningful information to their readers. Some poems like “Daddy” make their readers emotional as the readers try to understand the pain of the main character in the poem more intensely. Author, time and again, use rhyming words to aid memory of the readers for recitation. Imagery is that literary device which contains figurative language and function in such a way that the readers would imagine the world more nicely. For example: In the poem “Those Winter Sundays” the writer uses imagery and rhymes to recall the memories and to show unexpressed love towards his father which will make the readers emotional. Three specific poems discussed here provide vivid imagery to emotionally drag the readers towards the theme of the poem. In the poem “Daddy”, the author uses imagery to compare her father with a shoe and the Nazi army. For example the imagery in the ninth stanza “your neat moustache/ And your Aryan eye, bright blue. / Panzer-man, panzer-man, O You---“ shows the comparison with her father and Nazi. Similarly, in the first stanza, she mentions her father as a shoe and her life as a foot trapped in a shoe by saying” black shoe/ in which I have lived like a foot/ for thirty years.” This shows the cruelty and domination towards female by the male. Structurally, “Daddy” and “Let me not to the marriage of true minds” both have proper rhymes, but “Those Winter Sundays” contain some rhymes but not a proper rhyming scheme. (Analysis) Because love evokes positive vibes and good emotions, whereas ingratitude and male discrimination evoke frightening images for lots of readers, writers often use a different literary device and figurative language to intensify those meanings. “Those Winter Sundays” clearly evokes the feeling of love as well as ingratitude through both literal and figurative language. Symbols are those words which are something in the world of sense, including an action, that reveals something else, often otherworldly and plays the vital role in poetry (Symbol). The use of the symbol like “good shoes” and chronic anger (line 9, 12) shows the love of the father towards son and son being unhappy with his father. The poet also starts the poem by mentioning Sunday too and in the third line of the first stanza, he mentions” cracked hand that ached with labour” which shows the love and hard work of his father towards the family. The tone is an attitude of a writer towards a subject or an audience (Tone). Therefore, in the poem” Daddy” the author reckon on “dark tone” and negative feeling about male discrimination as if she has the negative feeling towards her father which will influence the reader’s emotion. “Let me not to the marriage of true minds” deals with the theme of everlasting love whereas it contains argumentative tone which helps
