Government is the body that regulates trade, laws, regulations and many other things. Government can be as big as the United States government or as small as the City of Madison's government. Many people wonder what the purpose of government is and how it works. Government is broken up into three different branches: executive, judicial, and legislative. The government is not perfect, but there are many things one can do as a citizen to help. What is the purpose of government, the three branches, and what can one do as a citizen to help? The purpose of government is to protect the general well being of its citizens. This includes, defending the country, taxing the citizens, creating unity between all its citizens, and freedom for all. The United States government defines this in its constitution. Sometimes it may feel that the government is doing more harm than good, but at the end of it all the government is only doing what is best for the country and what is best for the people. Each of these branches have equal power which does not allow one to overrule the other. This system is called checks and balances. The executive branch is ran by the president and makes all laws official and can remove and add cabinet members. The legislative branch makes the laws which are then voted on in congress and passed to the president (executive branch) to either veto the law or pass it. The judicial branch is the branch of government that interprets the laws. The judicial branch includes the supreme court and other federal court systems.
