Communication plays a vital role in our everyday lives. For example, we talk to instructors, friends, classmates, coworkers, bosses, and we even chat with the cashier as we’re checking out at the grocery store. Communication is unavoidable. However, because it is so common, we tend not to pay much attention to how good of a communicator we are. It has such a large impact on not only our lives, but also the lives of others, so I decided to assess and evaluate my communication skills. In this report I will go into further detail on the survey I took, highlight what I believe makes me a great communicator, and areas I could work on. According to the textbook, the three characteristics of interpersonal communication competence are appropriateness, effectiveness, and ethics. Out of the three of these, I believe I am most adept at using ethics in daily interpersonal communication. Many of the people in my generation have been conditioned to keep political correctness in mind while going through life, which helps us remember to be aware of our language. Furthermore, I have many friends of varying ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities. The first time I met him, he was taking my order at Starbucks and I went about the interaction as I normally would when ordering from Starbucks. After later befriending him, he relayed his struggle when customers can’t tell if he is a guy or a girl, and the customers don’t know how to address or interact with him.
