In chapter 1 of Discovering Our Past: The American Journey, by Glencoe, the main idea is exploration and its impact on the Americas. Clearly, exploration made a huge impact on the world by discovering new places, finding new routes, and riches. Portugal and Spain unleashed a new era of exploration by searching for sea routes to Asia by ship, Portugal mainly started the “Age of Exploration” because a sailor named Bartholomeu Dias reached the southern tip of Africa which was new land to them and a little while after, Vasco da Gama found the “long awaited” Sea route to Asia which inspired other people to sail as well. Other people had different goals while exploring the sea, like Ferdinand Magellan who was the leader of the first crew to sail around the world.
In the 1500’s and 1600’s, Europe dived into an era of exploration of new trade routes. Exploration carried out by explorers like Cortes, Diaz and Da Gama led Europe into new lands. The main motivations of these explorers were to gather spices and gold. Their countries were infatuated with the spices of Asia and with precious metals. Religion was not the main motivation for European exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries; however, the search for wealth was.
The European Age of Exploration had a few causes. One of them being the Ottomans who controlled eastern trade routes and were looking to expand. The missionaries in India allowed for Christianity to spread and flourish in the world. Without the search, colonization, and conversion of India, the world we know today would be delayed if not nonexistent. European exploration began during the Middle Ages. During the late 13th century, Italian explorer Marco Polo went on a 25-year overland journey through Mongolia and Japan in search of a route to the Far East for trading textiles and spices. By the mid-14th century, the Ottoman Empire had conquered most of the area between Europe and the Far East, and Arab traders were charging expensive fees for their spices.
The American Revolution was, to date, the best event to happen on American soil, providing freedom and representation in government to the individuals who fought so hard for it. France and Spain aided our cause, helping this group of brave colonists to defeat the strongest army in the world. But, there is a question still not answered; were the colonists justified in breaking away from Britain? The American colonists were justified in breaking away from the British because there was taxation without representation, they had no freedom, and the British government violated their individual British rights. By the end of the 1400s, many European ships left Europe to explore the world. This exploration could have been initiated by various events that occurred previously. Starting with the first event, the Black Death, in the 1300s, which caused the decline of the feudal system and lead to the rise of the Renaissance era, a period of time when people were craving for more knowledge in topics such as philosophy, anatomy, geography, etc. It was throughout this Renaissance period and because of new inventions such as the printing press that could have caused people to want to explore and expand their knowledge about the geography of the earth. New technological developments in ships helped Europe expand its territory to other continents. A letter to Christopher Columbus from the rulers of Spain revealed that he had sailed the seas to discover and conquer new land for Spain. If he succeeded in this task and spread Christianity, not only would he be rewarded, but the rest of Spain would be too (Document 1). This letter is most likely true due to the fact that it was written by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, who were funding Christopher’s exploration. The main goal of the Age of Exploration was to get more money and territory and to spread Christianity.
The Spanish, Portuguese, French, and English all wanted to explore and settle the New World for a variety of reasons. The European nations were searching for political dominance, and they would do whatever needed to be done to get it. An example would be the power hungry Spaniards who took control over the Aztec empire. Spain was much more advanced than the Aztecs and used their advantage of guns, horses, disease, and exploitation to swiftly conquer the empire. Another major reason for the Europeans expansion was their desire for wealth and gold.
Mostly for selfish desires but some just wanted to escape Europe and King George's rule. The people wanted a new start in life and desired adventure. Back in Europe people were already set to be succseful such as major noble families that were the "Rockerfellers" of their nation and would most likey continue to succeed while killing off any chance to make a decent living and thriving business. Also the people wanted to become famous and one way of doing that is being part of a group that is actually "doing" something. Cristopher Columbus was not just searching for a route he was trying to change a whole business deal by finding a huge shortcut, later on he discovered something much more important (not the America's) a whole "New World".
European explorers and conquistadors during the age of exploration were motivated by three things: God, gold and glory. The two most prominent of the three between 1492 and 1607 were gold and glory. Beginning in 1492 gold motivated many explorers, from Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the New World to the Virginia Company’s colonization of America. Gold is a symbol for wealth, and many explorers soon realized the New World’s potential for wealth. The Spanish’s interest in wealth inspired Columbus’s expedition in the first place, as he was sent to India to trade for spices.
They resorted to violent methods and tried to make the Natives take them to the real gold thinking that they were just hiding it from them. One reason as to why the Europeans began their exploration of the Americas was that they wanted to find a new trade route to Asia. Columbus believed that if he sailed west, he could reach Asia faster than traveling on land or going around Africa. Asia had the spices
What was the role of technology in European Explorations ? I think the role of technology in European explorations was so so important. If you think about it without technology they wouldn 't have made it that far. Some of the technology they had was like the ships without the ships Europe wouldn 't have conquered the world.
“For God, Gold, and Glory,” these words were used to describe the motives that led the Europeans into overseas exploration, expansion, and conquests. God stood for religion, gold for money, and glory for power. These each being characteristics of imperialism. An additional motive was based upon ideologies, more specifically Ethnocentrism. As the Europeans conquered the world they often carried these ideas with them, dominating over other people and cultures to stay on top.
The Spanish empire wanted to come and expand their religion and get money as well of their purpose towards the reason why they migrated to the New World. Bernal Diaz del Castillo, who was one of the Spanish conquistadors, on the reason of Spanish motivations towards the New World stated that, “We came to serve God and to get rich, as all men wish to
The Age of Exploration, starting from the 15th century and lasting until the beginning of the 17th century, was a period of time in which the Europeans explored the Americas and Africa while searching for a more efficient trade route with Asia. However, the Europeans did not just discover this lands, but also made use of them and the native population. The causes of the Age of Exploration were “God, Gold and Glory” which effects were the expansion of Christianity, importation of precious resources into Europe and colonization of new lands. The first cause of the Age of Exploration was “God” which resulted in an expansion of Christianity.
