Leadership is tough, it’s challenging, it can be unpleasant, but it’s rewarding. In order to be a leader three abilities are required with no exceptions given; the ability to take responsibility, the ability to be adaptable and the ability to take charge. A leader must use these abilities to accomplish his or her mission. All of these abilities are essential for leader to be able to lead a successful mission. If someone can do these three things the rest will fall into place. However if someone cannot do any one of these three things they are not able to be a leader regardless of the rank or position they hold. Without it, like without the other two pillars, being a successful leader is impossible. Realizing that change is needed and being able to actually conduct that change is important. Being able to constantly change and modify commands, tactics and knowledge is an important key to being a successful leader. Without this ability leaders would not be able to overcome the challenges of a constantly changing battlefield. They would run into a problem that can’t be solved with the generic solutions that usually work and would fail their mission. Being able to analyze, understand and change is essential to problem solving and thus mission success. Without adaptability leaders will be left behind in our ever changing world. Adaptability is especially important in the Cyber Protection Brigade as the brigade is ever changing as the Army attempts to make a functioning unit capable of operating in Cyberspace. Soldiers who wind up in the Cyber Protection Brigade require adaptability as the unit is different when compared to many units in the Army. Neglect of one will make for complete failure as a leader. It is important to give attention to all of the pillars. These pillars are not completely separate either as the ability to do one will help with the ability to do another. The example of finding the right way to take charge in a given environment with a given people is a good example of how taking charge and adaptability interplay with each other. While the pillars of leadership provide a solid base to start from they are not the only abilities leader’s need to be successful. Much more is needed things such as compassion, knowledge, charisma and many more are important, but not essential to be a leader.
