A simple definition of leadership is that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. Being a leader does not refer to a straightforward job; however, it requires overcoming obstacles, handling competing agendas, and working with limited resources. Great leaders have brought their nation in prosperity and order, whereas incompetent leaders led the nation in ruins and made their people suffer and die. But first, what kind of person is a great or a good leader, there are two types of goodness which are morally good and a good leader in the sense that they stay in power. From my perspective an effective leader is a morally good leader; in addition, he should stay in power. Obviously, the leader …show more content…
Decisive leaders make vital decisions which make them strong and gain power and respect from their nations. Strong leaders are required in a crisis and catastrophic times, as shown in the African proverb, "an army of sheep led by a lion can defeat an army of lions led by a sheep." Moreover, the leader should be strong enough in order not to lose the control of his reign. There are two examples of morally good leaders who lost their authority because of their weakness. The first example is Snowball in Animal Farm, Snowball fails because he cannot compete with Napoleon's brutal and selfish purpose to gain power "At the meetings, Snowball often won over the majority through his brilliant speeches, but Napoleon was better at canvassing support for him in between times."(Orwell 70). Power struggles emerged and served to divide and not unite the animals of the farm. Power became a corrupting and ultimately negative influence by the end of the book. The second example is Ralph in Lord of the flies, he lost the control of children in front of Jack "Jack clamored among them, the conch forgotten." "Come on! Follow me!" "The space under the palm trees was full of noise and movement. Ralph was on his feet too, shouting for quiet, but no one heard him. Humble leaders are always thinking about those they are leading and rarely about themselves. John Stuart Mill, Martin Luther King, Old Major, Snowball, and Ralph all are servant leaders who choose service over self-interest. For example, Old Major in Animal Farm he says, "I do not think, comrades, that I shall be with you for many months longer, and before I die I feel it my duty to pass on to you such wisdom as I have acquired."(Orwell 47). As a leader, he forgets about himself and only argues animals to pay attention to their miserable life, encouraging them to rebel. Another great example of a humble leader is Martin Luther King as he gives his life serving others. “If a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. furthermore, he was killed for his dream of justice and equality. Humble leadership empowers others, so humility is a great feature in any great
