Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus People have ruled the Earth for centuries, each notable for their accomplishments or corruption. There have been recorded leaders for civilizations many people have never heard of, except ancient cities like China, Greece, Rome, etc. Rome, being one of the renowned cities, had some great leaders and was popularly known for their exceptional armies and even greater leaders. One of these leaders was Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, or Claudius, who was a great leader for what he achieved. Claudius was born with a disability, which left him with a limp leg and a speech impediment. His own family would often treat him harshly, keeping him inside and away from the real world while continuously keeping him from the throne. “Since he had few responsibilities, Claudius spent his free time reading and writing histories”(Wasson 2011). Claudius was known to be a respected historian, often immersing himself in books and other historians to gain knowledge of the past, which aided the process in which he made dozens of historical documents regarding things such as Carthage, Etruscans, the Roman Republic, and the Roman alphabet (Andrews 2021). With the few resources Claudius had, he was often bored, so he engaged in traditional activities. Claudius had a taste for the old Roman games, which had games such as chariot races and gladiator battles. He loved it so much that he often put himself with the crowd, counting the victor’s gold with them. Eventually, Claudius arranged a 19,000-man mock sea battle for his entertainment. Even though he had the freedom to do these things, he was never equal to his family. He was purposefully rejected on multiple occasions by people such as his uncle, Tiberius, for simple requests such as a start to his political career. The idea of him taking the throne was only because of his nephew, Gaius’, death. It almost didn’t happen because of the Senate, who nearly declared Rome a republic while getting rid of rulers altogether. Meanwhile, others wanted to promote themselves as the new leader of Rome. Fortunately, neither of those actions happened. Claudius had the title of the ruler of Rome, and his first action as a ruler was to capture and execute Gaius’ assassins. He was not allowed to condone the men himself due to his opinions on their actions and politics. These events have happened before; Claudius’ father died on the campaign while Claudius was one year old, his brother, Germanicus, died to suspicious circumstances, and his sister, Livilla, died after the occurrences after the latter Sejanus had fallen.
