Harper Lee uses imagery in order to intensify the mood of terror and suspense as Jem Trespasses on the Radley Property. The best example of imagery is when Jem decides to trespass on the Radley Property. Jem was filled with fear as he stepped on to the Radley Property. The fear Jem feels inside himself can only be increased and he hears the sound of a squeaking gate opening, and the rustling of the leaves in the distance.

In the novel Jem and Scout were exploring with their air riffles when they saw a dog walking down a street. The dog looked sick so they went to tell Capurnia the housekeeper. She called Atticus at work and then Atticus called the sheriff and they drove over to the house together to see the dog. When they got there they found out that the dog had rabies, sheriff told Atticus to shoot the dog before it hurts anyone, Atticus did not want to shoot because he had not shot a gun in 30 years but he did and shot the dog in one shot.
