The Stanford Prison Experiment was an experiment that studied the psychological effects of becoming a prison guard and prisoner. Twenty-four volunteers from Stanford University took part in this study. The young men were divided into two groups, guards and prisoners. They were put into a mock jail setting where they planned to stay for two weeks. The experiment quickly got out of hand and was shut down after 6 days. The guards let the authority they had in the experiment go to their heads causing them to become abusive. Also the prisoners started showing signs of extreme anxiety and stress.
