Atticus is usually straightforward with his children when explaining. But, when he was telling his kids the way they are being raised is going to change he was gentle and cautious. He was not comfortable with the message he is delivering and knew it would not be welcomed by his children. Atticus was hesitating before getting to his point. But Jem sensed this and snapped back impatiently because this was not typical of his father. Atticus was also fidgeting while talking to his kids, but as a lawyer he never fidgeted while talking, it was very uncommon.
