Racism has been a common problem in society for at least hundreds of years, especially after slaves were freed. In the novel, the problem of racism and discrimination is portrayed in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, like Tom Robinson's case where he is blamed and killed for crimes even though he's innocent.. An imbalance of power between whites and people of color leads to African Americans being discriminated against and killed like Tom Robinson. Atticus, who has no racist ideologies, says that she has worth and is a necessary part of the family. Another example of racism and discrimination in the story is how Tom Robinson was treated throughout the book. Tom Robinson is one of the kind of local black people who was charged with crimes he did not commit. In chapter 21 of the book, Atticus and his family are at the courthouse for the verdict of the Mayella and Tom Robinson case. Right at the end, the group of white people go around the table and they all end up saying Tom is guilty even though he most likely is innocent (Lee 210). Tom being called guilty at the verdict is a great example of how people were treated differently because of the imbalance of power between races in the 1930s. Tom was believed to be guilty even with opposing evidence because people assumed blacks were bad and they were useless and criminals.
