Domino’s Pizza,the biggest pizza chain in the country with a little over 13,000 franchises, makes 16 million dollars every month. This is all because of one man, who put his blood, sweat and tears into a small pizza place in Ypsilanti, Michigan. A man who never gave up and never stopped believing in himself. Although he had many accomplishments, he went through many hardships in his life to make them. That man is Tom Monaghan. Tom Monaghan was born on March 25, 1937. His Father died when he was only four years old, leaving his Mom in charge of supporting young Tom and his brother, James. His Mother was not financially fit to raise two children, so she put Tom and Jim into St. Joseph’s Home for Boys. He described the orphanage as a living hell. While in the orphanage, Monaghan’s Roman Catholic faith was greatly inspired by Sister Bernarda, a Felician nun working in the orphanage. It was because of her that he would later join the seminary. In 1949, after six long years, Tom’s mother finally collected Tom and his brother, and they went to live in Traverse City Michigan. He stayed with her for awhile, but ended up in foster care. He owned the Tigers for about a decade. Then, one day, he read a passage by C.S. Lewis about pride, Tom completely changed his life. He sold the Detroit Tigers, turned his office suite into an office reception room, stopped the building of his mansion, sold his car collection, and retired. He has donated a lot of his money to many pro-life causes, started Ave Maria college, and funded and oversaw the construction of a new cathedral in Managua, Nicaragua, after the old one collapsed in an earthquake. He has also been very active in the Republican Party, and was a key financial backer of Sam Brownback in the 2008 presidential
