Police arrived at the scene of an attempted escape from the Maycomb County Jail. Authorities say Tom Robinson was shot 17 times by the guards as he was climbing the fence. Earlier this week, Tom had been convicted for rape against Mayella Ewell, daughter of Mr. Bob Ewell. Mayella Ewell filed a complaint, that she had been “taken advantage of” and raped. No doctor was called, but county sheriff, Mr. Heck ‘Tate arrived at the scene.

He ran towards the window to discover Mayella being raped by Tom Robinson. When Bob Ewell enters the house to assist with Mayella’s situation, Tom had already left the residence through the front door. After adjusting to the situation, Bob raced to Heck Tate to inform him about the issue. Bob Ewell provided that he saw the room was “slung about” as if “there was a fight”, resulting in Mayella to be “on the floor squallin’”.

Mayella said he tried to rape her and beat her, there are two sides to the story. I believe that Mayella lied under oath, I believe she lied for a life, for it to not be her, for it to not be someone she knows behind bars for a crime that she didn’t commit.

During the book, there are multiple accusations and false statements that spread throughout the town. The characters who were set out to be bad were not always as they turned out to be. People are not always who we think they are going to be. At the start of the book, the townspeople viewed Tom Robinson as a scary person.

The main character and narrator, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, lived with her brother Jem, who is three years older than her six years of age, and her father Atticus, a lawyer. The author, Harper Lee, introduces the idea of discrimination to the main characters of the book. She shows this through the town’s opinions, Tom Robinson’s court case, and the way people avoid expressing positivity towards African Americans because it is not socially acceptable in that time.

Today was the day of Tom Robinson's trial. I prepared all my evidence and I knew I was ready for the battle. I told the Judge that there was no evidence to connect Tom to this crime. There was evidence that a crime was committed, but not that he was involved in it. Also, all the injuries were located on Mayella's left side.
Atticus was appointed to be the lawyer of Tom Robinson who was on trial for raping and beating Mayella Ewell. Tom was a black man who worked on a farm for Mr. Link Deas. During the trial, Tom Robinson had no evidence against him that could say he raped and beat Mayella Ewell. Tom looked off balance because his left arm was a foot shorter than his right arm, from when he tore the muscles in a cotton gin when he was ten years old. Tom Robinson went up to tell his version of the story, and it was different and more realistic then what the Ewells’ version of the events.

Judge Taylor asks Atticus to defend Tom and he accepts, knowing that his decision will cause chaos around him. Tom Robinson deserves a defense under the law and Atticus knows he is the best or only person to provide that defense. Scout asks Atticus why he took the case if some believe he shouldn’t, and he responds by saying, “if I didn’t, I couldn’t hold up my own head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee 86). Atticus, aware of the racial tension and disapproval in Maycomb’s white community, chooses to do the right thing.

Tom Robinson’s side of the story was that Mayella asked him to come fix the hinges on the door in the house. Mayella already had all this planned if she had saved enough nickels to send all of the children out for ice cream so she and Tom would be alone. Then she asked Tom to climb up on a chair to get a box, and as he stood there, she grabbed him around the legs.
