High School Track and Field Another experience which impacted my development in adolescence was participating in track and field in high school. This was the first organized sports team I had been a part of since playing tee-ball in kindergarten, so I was undeniably outside of my comfort zone. This experience impacted me most in the social and self- domains, which will be addressed in the following paragraphs. Social One outcome of my participation in track and field was a change in how I interact with others, especially strangers. I was always a shy child, which was likely exasperated by growing up in a small town and attending schools where everyone knew each other, at least in passing. The last social outcome from participating in track and field was that I became less focused on receiving social acceptance from any one individual. This was partly due to my expanding social circle. I now have different groups of friends in different areas of my life. If my class friends suddenly did not accept me, I could, for instance, turn to my track friends. I also became less focused on social acceptance because I realized that if someone would not accept me, I could always find people who would, just as I had found people who accepted me when I joined track. I try to remember and apply this lesson today by forming and maintaining friendships in lots of different areas of my life, so I have support from many different individuals. Being on the track and field team encouraged me to try on new roles and develop my identity. Before joining the team, I was in a period of identity foreclosure, as I had already decided who I was, and I was uninterested in changing. After joining the track team, however, I was interacting with new people and trying new things, which made identity exploration almost
