“Population, Sustainability, and Malthus: Crash Course World History”, John Green examines one of the theories about the downfall of humanity, proposed by Thomas Malthus. Malthus wrote an essay on the Principles of Population to explain why at the time, population growth was steadily slow. John Green goes ahead to talk about how Malthus compared the poor to rabbits. Expressing that the same powers that constrained the population of rabbits would do likewise to poor people. Forces such as: predators, weather, epidemics and starvation.
Introduction Conservation, or protection, of land, air, and water resources, is one of the most important factors in keeping agriculture alive and well in America today. In years prior to the 2014 Farm bill, there were over twenty distinct conservation programs, meaning that there were several programs that overlapped each other, and were repetitive in activities and other practices. With over four years of debating, the 2014 Farm Bill was put into place. With that accomplishment, many changes to the Conservation title were created, including, program consolidation and reauthorizing. This paper will examine the factors of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and how it will help farmers across America.
Even after seeing all the damage that was caused, people still seeked to take it even if it created disasters. By the end all the “wells were poisoned, all rivers ran with filth, [and] all seas were dead; there was no land left to grow food” (5). Greed for more money, more power, and more influence, brought society to fail. People used all of the Earth's resources for themselves, not thinking about the consequences of the future. The author heeds a warning for those reading to stop and think about the future to not think about just in yourself but to be considerate to not take all for yourself.
In 2011, the animal population in the United States was over 500 trillion. Illustrating the growth of many living species, in which negatively impact people to have a sustainable life. Research came to a stopping point in where the pros and cons of a particular provantion that helps out with daily routines. Animals population has overtaken such magnitude in North America sanity and public safety with their large amount of damage on the environment. However, people do not want animals to be killed.
Almost all of currently threatened species are at risk because of human activities, mainly due or habitat loss, introduction of exotic species or global warming. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) plans to change this. “The ESA was enacted by Congress in 1973. It states that the federal government has the responsibility to protect endangered species, threatened species and critical habitats. The ESA has a list to protect plants and animals nationally and worldwide.
I believe that the Japanese and the Norwegians have a very valid point on the permitting of hunting of non-endangered species of whales. The global community has jumped on the whaling issue for various reasons. Some might include the fact some whales are becoming endangered as a result of the whaling industry, but I believe that a lot of the reason lies in the fact that the western world finds the concept of whaling disturbing simply because of the size and the human like qualities that we place on the animal. This argument then becomes a question of one culture versus the other. One culture sees whaling as barbaric and believe that it should stop the other culture sees whaling as normal since it has been a part of their culture for a long time.
The Endangered Species Act was passed into law on December 28, 1973, the act was designed to conserve and save threatened plants, animals, and their habitats. The Endangered Species Act is widely supported, and around 87% of Americans agree that the act is a successful way to keep endangered and threatened animals safe. The act has numerous positive effects on plant, and animal life, these positive effects are saving endangered and threatened species, preserving their ecosystem, and protecting plants and animals that assist in treating diseases. According to the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, 99% of species ever listed on the endangerment list remain on the planet today. The Bald Eagle is one of the many species saved by the Endangered Species
Some more eccentric than others. One major cause that contributed to the fall of Easter Island was environmental degradation. Many scientists have come up with numerous reasons as to how the environmental damage was caused, but they all agree that it lead to the eventual collapse of the society on Easter Island. According to Jared Diamond in his recent book ‘How societies chose to fail or succeed’, He states that “In just a few centuries the people of Easter Island wiped out their forest, drove their plants and animals to extinction, and saw their complex society spiral into chaos and cannibalism”. Diamond theorises that the fall of Easter Island was purely caused by the Native Islanders destroying their land completely.
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Wild Lands Policy regulated and run by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) are two different government actions taken to ensure the safety and preservation of plants, animals and the environment they live in. These policies should not be controversial but making everyone happy is an impossible job especially when the federal government is involved. Environmentalist and Citizens who feel the government is overreaching both have their positions and both are unwilling to budge. The Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973 and since then it has done exactly what it was designed to do, saves plants and animals that are on the verge of extinction.
Commercial whaling, the definition, “hunting of whales for scientific research and their usable products like meat, oil and blubber.”. You may say that it doesn’t sound so bad, well it wouldn’t be bad… if that is what whales are being used for. Commercial whaling is meant to only supposed to be used for meat, oil and blubber, but whales have been killed for scientific purposes that they could have been apart of and still be alive. Not only that, but the main whaling country, Japan, uses whales for meat but Japan has slowly decreased the number of people eating whale meat. Americans should refuse to purchase products made through commercial whaling because the animals are going extinct due to overfishing and commercial whaling is inhumane.
In recent years, a debate of the global commons security governance conducted by the U.S. is rapidly heating up and spreading rapidly throughout the world from academic level to the decision-making level and even action level. In 2010, the Center for a New American Security launched a heavyweight report "Contended Commons: The Future of American Power in a Multipolar World," Stanford University Press's "Securing Freedom in the Global Commons," examines in the details of the U.S. "Global commons"strategy. Not long ago, the US Congress passed the Space Commercial Act, recognizing two specific property rights: First, "Who can work in space, who will have these resources," and second, "Others can not interfere while the U.S. citizens work in
Instead of providing animals with lifetime care, zoos separate animals that have built lifetime long bonds causing traumatic transitions all their life. Spending the day at your local zoo has been a preferred attraction for years, but a lot of people are not informed about the consequences it has on many of its inhabitants. Animals often are seen performing extensive pacing in their enclosure, over grooming themselves, and sham-chewing as a result of their unnatural confinement. Through time there have been numerous recognized cases of humans caging animals for entertainment.
Kaydee Robison Econ 145 Assignment #1 Assignment #1: Commons A common property resource is a type of good that is rival but non-excludable. It is difficult and costly to prevent other people from benefitting from its use usually because of the good’s vastness, such as the ocean. Because it is challenging to protect the good, the good is available for all to use and take advantage of. People are inherently selfish and will exhaust a resource in order to gain, but they do not realize that they are only hurting their future selves in the process. If people assume the world’s resources are infinite then they will only increase human misery by abusing the resources and not considering the carrying capacity of the land (Hardin 1968).
Wildlife Conservation is often seen as a bad thing, but if you look at it from my perspective, then it is actually a good thing. People think of it as holding wild animals captive, but we are actually protecting them from poachers. The purpose of Wildlife Conservation is to protect the animals in danger, which I am in agreement 110%. Other people argue that we shouldn’t have conservations, but they don’t know the harm that can happen to unprotected animals.
Zoos have been around since the eighteenth century. A zoo is defined as a compound where wild animals are kept for viewing and studying. The purpose of a zoo is mainly for education and protection, preserving animal species that are either at a risk of becoming extinct or for increased collection size (Jamieson). Animals from around the world have been enclosed in an area where we can admire and study these fine creatures. However, many modern zoos around the world have introduced animal shows, petting and feeding sessions to attract more visitors in order to earn more money.
