If you asked me two years ago when I was finishing Ohio State’s Bachelor of Art Education program if I would be going back to graduate school I would have said that I hadn’t even thought about it. My undergraduate degree was all I really needed to fulfill my lifelong dream of being an art teacher, so why go back to school? Well, to my dismay, here I am at the tail end of my second year of teaching doing just that. While it is true that my acquired degree has allowed me to pursue my dream, I find myself even more passionate and in love with this field than ever before and I want to learn more. Instead of talking about things, or even fully facing my emotions, I began distracting myself by pulling out my eyelashes, eyebrows and hair as a way of coping, a disorder known as Trichotillomania. This started when I was seven and was an ongoing battle for years to come, but with the help of creating art it is a battle that I gained control of. Many people from my cohort and I keep in touch, sharing stories from our diverse teaching experiences, giving each other advice, and congratulating each other on our achievements. Though it would be different to be part of an online cohort, I believe this will be a positive difference as it will allow me to learn from others from even more diverse situations. My approach to art education continues to align directly with that of OSU’s, as I strive to foster social change and advance public interest through the arts and visual culture. Having this connection to the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy, and having already experienced some of the exceptional education it has to offer, I am confident that this is the only program through which I wish to receive my Master’s
