After the devastating storm, Aeneas directs the remaining ship to head for the closest shore which is the Libyan coast. Once they arrive safely on shore, Aeneas starts to lift the sprites of his followers by providing food and wine to them.
Homer’s Odyssey: Helen on the Wall & Hector and Andromache Greek mythology is still a widely studied and important subject in today’s society. For many years, Greek myths were passed down orally from generation to generation. These myths are stories with a purpose and reason that serve as an explanation for why certain things occur throughout history. For our presentation, we explored the topic of Homer’s Odyssey. The Odyssey deals with a very important time in Greek history, the time of the Trojan War.
The movie Troy, from Hollywood has been one of the greatest Hollywood movie ever made, it was nominated for more than 10 awards and got into the “Best of Warner Bros- 50 Film Collection”. In addition, it made approximately $497 million worldwide. It was one of the most successful films ever made. However, the content that was in the movie brought some speculation into whether or not the events of the movie were historically accurate. The purpose of this essay is to answer the question of how accurate the Hollywood movie, Troy, really was and whether it portrayed Homer’s tragic, charming side of the story or the predicted historical side.
Most of us have heard the story of the Trojan Horse and the Trojan war. The story of Troy is considered by many to be based on actual events and many historians have tried to determine whether or not the story is true. In “The Trojan War Is There Truth Behind The Legend?” by Trevor R. Bryce. (2002) In this article Bryce looks at any evidence there is for the occurence of the Trojan war. He find that that there are many events that seem to relates to the Trojan, war he can not find any evidence to support that it was an actual historical event.
Even though the Trojan War sets itself up as a very controversial topic to many people, there is one positive aspect to this topic. The Trojan War contributed specific evidence to our generation on how greeks fought or may have fought battles through the Illiad. One could classify homeric warfare used by the greeks with simple weaponry, specific tactics in practice and use of humanistic ideologies. First, an important topic of warfare to address is the types of simple weaponry used. The weaponry that caught my attention first was the use of shields.
This is explored through Homer’s symbolisation of Priam’s drive to Achilles’ tent as a ‘death-ward’ voyage from a ‘decadent’ Trojan city, to the ‘desolate’ underworld, of which arouses a sense of an approaching ‘doom’ that foreshadows the destined fall the Trojans ultimately suffer. Through the austere alliteration of ‘death-ward’, ‘decadent’, ‘doom’, Homer conveys a sense of the grief that inevitably coincides with the tragedy of warfare. The notion of loss and fear of what is to come is reinforced through the rich death imagery: ‘weeping’, ‘terror’, and ‘gusting winds’. Furthermore, Homer uses the Psychopompus god Hermes “the guider of souls” to accompany Priam in his voyage, whereby he ‘picks up his wand’ and ‘charms [Priam] to sleep’, an allusion to its brother demise. In the case of Achilles, the effects of grief are particularly transformative, in the sense that his ambitions alter drastically after undergoing the grieving process.
The ancient city of Troy was located where the modern city of Anatolia in Turkey now stands. Historians believe that the city addressed in Homer’s The Iliad existed from 1700 BC and 1190 BC. The description of the walled city matches the ruins found. However, this city did not experience the Trojan war.

The epic poem, The Iliad written by Homer shows the conflicts and events that occurred between the Greeks and Trojans during the Trojan War. Among both sides there are warriors who follow a distinct code, known as the heroic code. This Heroic code helps portray the characteristics of the warriors and their perspective on war. This distinct code is composed of many elements such as arete, acceptance of fate, honour, excellence in war, leadership, courage and power. These traits are shown within the main warriors, Hector and Achilles throughout the epic war poem and helps to guide their decisions.
In the epic poem, the Iliad written by Homer, several characters taking part in the warfare between the Achaeans and the Trojans are portrayed as embodying the heroic code of courage, physical strength, leadership, arete of value of honour, and the acceptance of fate. The heroic code is illustrated by the actions of the Trojan prince, Hector and the Achaeans strongest warrior, Achilles. Both of these characters display the Greek’s image of a hero, and can also let the reader discern what the society admires, looks up to and aspires to in its heroes. There are also characters who fail to be heroic, such as the Trojan “vivid and beautiful” prince, Paris. These characters in the Iliad illustrate the qualities that Ancient Greek society values.

Iliad is recognized as one of the most famous ancient monuments of literature. The full understanding of this epic poem is hardly possible without thorough analysis of its main characters. Among all the episodes of the Trojan War, Homer chooses the moment of Achilles’ wrath and thus creates a poem in which he becomes the central figure. From the Ancient Greeks’ point of view, Achilles represents the ideal of manliness and pure heroism, for he is brave and fights for heroics, not profits. Today, one can agree with this interpretation, yet Achilles is probably the most controversial character because he combines various personality traits and acts in accordance with his ambiguous nature.
