This TV show is a comedic cartoon that follows a character named peter griffin. Though the show is crude and merciless at its attempt to wow its viewers with its Graphic and completely inappropriate comedy, it does entail quite the amount of sociological concepts however when watching the show they could be very easy to miss. Back to peter Griffin however. He has a son a daughter, a friend and a dog that I will be discussing. I chose these 5 characters because I believe that they each have their own sociological concept that ties to them.
The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. Many social issues are portrayed in television shows because they are common in every society so it makes it easy to relate to the audience. One show in particular that has many social issues that are demonstrated perfectly to the audience is a Netflix original show called “Shameless.” This is a show that focuses on a single family in which the father, Frank, is a deadbeat drunk who is never reliable. The mother, Monica, abandoned the family a year or so after she had the last child, she is mentally bipolar. She shows up occasionally throughout the series, but for the most part is in some unknown place to the audience.
Democracy is one of the words James Henslin (2014, p.51) lists among the ten core values of the United States that sociologist Robin Williams identified. In the description of this value, he discusses how it refers primarily to majority rule. However, does the majority actually rule, or has American democracy sold out to capitalistic America? Through application of the conflict perspective, an apparent relationship is made between a select group of those who own the means of production and the mass of those who don’t, where those who do own this means exploit their power for personal gain and shift American democracy to oligarchy.
Sociological Perspectives are different perspectives of how to view the world. The three sociological perspectives are the functionalist theory, the conflict theory, and the interactionalist theory. Robert Merton and Emile Durkheim are considered to have founded functionalism. Functionalism emphasizes the way in which the parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability. Functionalists believe that all parts of society are linked together.
The sociological imagination refers to Mills notion on how social forces can influence an individual. He refers to it as an ability to see situations in a broader social spectrum and see how interactions can influence an individual and situations. It is important in terms of studying society because it is a way to help us see things not how they appear to be on a surface elements but through an alternative perspective. The differences between micro and macrosociology is that micro sociology studies people at an interpersonal way, such as face to face interactions while macro sociology studies people on a much larger scale by looking at the bigger picture. A societal issue that can be studied using both perspectives would be divorce.
In modern society, capital punishment is the understood punishment for those that commit violent crimes. In the confined walls of prison, the inmates have to adapt to the institution and except the differing norms of the surrounding they may call home for many years. This adaptation is seen as wealthy banker, Andy Dufresne, was found guilty for the murder of his wife and her lover. The film follows Andy through his journey as he runs into unique characters like Brooks, Red, and the warden. Although, Andy was falsely convicted, he was able to experience prison and all of the negative stigmas that prison entails.

The reality of social work is that of a job that handles familial strife and complications in a very difficult and demanding career. I interviewed Freddy L. Wilson an educated individual who has a bachelors’ in sociology from Fisk University and Masters’ in social work from Howard University and has years of career experience dealing with abuse. In his long career, he has worked in probation, children services, hospice, and as a medical social worker. In my interview with Mr. Wilson, he chose to specifically talk to me about his 9 years working at the San Bernardino County family reunification. Through our conversation, I gained knowledge on the way that the government handle both victims and perpetrators of child abuse.
A common sense understanding of sociology of the general population would be that is we socialise in groups with common interests, for example within a sport or career prospects. The common sense of what the population see sociology as differ from what sociology actually is as it is the study of human society as a whole and the groups that we live in. The distinction between this and other social sciences is that sociology is attempts to explain human behaviour looking at a wider scale. Sociology focuses on many different topics such as diversity, religion, health and poverty to name a few whereas psychology, for example focuses more on the individual itself. Sociology research: My research topic would be “Why Do Students Drop Out of School? I would like to find what the factors are why students drop out of college and if is possible help students to find solutions before a drop occurs. This is my fifth semester at NPC, I have witnessed that many students have dropped out. I am sure this topic is sociologically appropriated because it would create awareness of the factors that lead to dropping out of school and continued research would prevent future students from dropping out of school.
Since the beginning of modern human civilization, there has always been tension for those who do not share the same color, background, culture, or race. People often tend to stick to those who are similar to themselves while also alienating those for are different and who seem to pose a threat. American History X is about an old brother and younger brother relationship and how one person has the ability to influence the other in a big way. Derek Vinyard, who is the older brother and Danny Vinyard, the younger brother, both live in a white supremacist mentality passed down by their father at an early age through racist comments and stereotypes. Their white supremacist ideology results in the imprisonment of Derek when he murders an African American rival when he attempt to steal his car.
