Exploration of Serial Killers
The intention of the theses is to demonstrate how society glamorizes serial killers through media, specifically; film, television, news, and merchandising. Next the document will identify and define the categories of serial killers which are organized and disorganized and types of serial killers based on the type of crime they commit expressly; thrill seekers, mission-oriented, visionary killers, and power/control seekers. Thereafter I will delve into how serial killers are created; genetics, abnormalities of the frontal lobe, and life’s circumstances. Furthermore, television tends to accomplish the same feat as film by attempting to sway the audience toward adoration of serial killers. Additionally, a few television shows deserving mention are Hannibal, Bates Motel, and Dexter. Hannibal Lector as in Silence of the Lambs is a Dr. and well liked member of the community who kills people that insult or annoy him whereas, Norman Bates is a High School student who has blackouts, kills people and does not remember. His blackouts and mental issues that need to be addressed however, he is an extremely likeable young man. Dexter Morgan is a Blood analyst and a serial killer who only kills criminals. These shows force audiences to sympathize and even root for these killers because; they are attractive and seemingly normal men. The audience cheers and applauds them and the deeds the do as in the ending credits to Dexter Season one where him and his sister Deb walk through a hail of cheering fans and admirers because in Dexter’s fantasy what he does should be idolized (Manos 2007). Society is interested in the macabre and many people believe such artifacts offer power and control. Accordingly, it is well-defined that media glamourizes serial killers merchandising, fans, television and film now I will identify the categories, sub categories, and types of serial killers. Although it is nearly impossible to fully categorize and understand serial killers, it is possible to review their methods and practices to better define what type of criminal they are. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has defined three distinct types of killers based murder on how the complete their murders. Understanding which category a serial killer falls into can make it easier to investigate the crimes and bring killers to justice (National Museum of Crime & Punishment, 2015, para 1). Organized Killers are the most difficult to identify and capture and is highly intelligent and meticulously organized. Every detail of the crime is planned perfectly and no incriminating evidence is left behind. This killer often stalks the victim for days to find the perfect target, once the victim is chosen; the killer takes and conveys them to an alternate location. The killer commits murder and once the victim is dead, the killer ensures the body is not located unless they want it found and these killers take great pride
