For centuries, story characters have captivated people with their heroic deeds and dauntless actions. A perfect example of this type of character is the legendary Beowulf. Beowulf tells the story of the Geat’s strongest warrior who defeats three cruel and frightful monsters known as Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. Beowulf’s battles against these monsters are similar and different in various ways. As one reads this epic tale about the valiant Beowulf, they become familiar with the story and the importances of the battles that took place. He was well aware that death was a risk of fighting against Grendel, but he wanted to help the people destroy the monster. When Grendel arrived at Herot to fight Beowulf, Beowulf immediately caught his claws and caused him a great amount of pain. He overpowered Grendel and forced him to retreat back to his lair (Beowulf, 333-336). Beowulf finally ended Grendel's reign of terror in the Land of the Danes and was followed by a victory celebration in Herot with Hrothgar and his people. Unfortunately, the celebration did not last long as Grendel’s mother arrived at Herot to avenge her son’s death. In doing so the she murdered one of Hrothgar’s closest friend, which motivated Beowulf to swim to the mother’s lair and kill her. During the battle, Beowulf realized that he was not be able to effortlessly defeat Grendel’s mother as he had done with his previous enemies because his sword could not slice through her skin. However, he continued to fight despite this obstacle, and in the end, was successful in killing her.
