I realised I wanted to study something to do with science after attending the Uncaged Monkeys tour a few years ago, where Brian Cox, Richard Wiseman and Ben Goldacre really inspired me to learn more about science and gave me a desire to be part of the great expansions happening in science today. This interest narrowed to chemistry because of my enjoyment of the subject.Chemistry fascinates me. The way that everything that has ever or will ever exist can be simplified down to 118 different elements is something I find astounding and the way that these elements form life in many different forms is incredible. As part of my service as a prefect I assisted a year 7 tutor group, being a role model for the young people and assisting their teacher in leading the class. This demonstrates a caring nature by helping the younger students with their organisation and with preparation for house challenges and exams. Another area of my 6th form service has been reader mentoring. This involves working with children in a low ability year 7 English lesson and helping them to progress in their reading ability. Again, this shows a caring nature and a willingness to help others. Last July, I was selected as one of six students from my school to travel to Zambia and volunteer out there with students from 3 other schools from around the UK. We worked with disabled children from a local specialist school, taught primary school children and completed some building projects, as well as climbing a mountain. My experience in Zambia has inspired me to want to go abroad in the future. This demonstrates that I can work in a team with people I don’t know and work hard even in arduous conditions. This demonstrates commitment which is paramount for university as it proves I will not drop out if I find the course hard. I have a strong interest in music, playing six instruments including: guitar, piano and melodeon. This shows my drive to learn and to attempt new things. In addition to this I have been in the school choir since I started Bede Academy in 2013 showing commitment and an ability to work as part of a team. My main musical passion is folk music, having played in and assisted leadership of a school folk band during year 10 and 11 and additionally playing at a local folk club as well as attending Folkworks summer school at Van Mildert College, Durham for 2 years.
