Major events that occurred throughout history enabled Americans to obtain wanted rights and freedoms and set up a baseline for the formation of the United States. These gained freedoms and rights promoted life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for Americans. Events such as the American Revolution, the creation of the Bill of Rights, the Age of Expansionism, and the Civil War enabled a positive change in rights and freedoms for Americans. Rights were positively changed during the American Revolution the spread of ideas and the solidification of rights and freedom from Britain by the Declaration of Independence.
On December 15, 1791 The United states took steps toward making The Bill of rights official. James Madison wrote the first ten amendments. This is just a document stating the rights of citizens. The bill grants rights such as: “freedom of religion, speech, and the press”. There are more things to name, but that was just to give you a general idea.
Today the government compromised on these rights in the name of security or the general welfare in various cases that deal with amendments such as the 1st and 2nd Amendments, which all seem to bring miscellaneous debate among them. The Bill of Rights are the first ten amendments in our Constitution which protect our fundamental rights and ensure a limited government. In 1868 the 14th Amendment was added, which guarantees citizens equal protection under the law and due process. For the Bill of Rights to be effective it would have to protect everyone rights equally, but there are too many cases when minorities or anyone else’s rights are infringed. Therefore the Bill of Rights and 14th Amendment is ineffective and does not protect the rights of all citizens. Someone’s race, gender, and religion could all affect how they are treated.
The amendments that were ratified on December 15, 1791 were also known as the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is the fifth version of the constitution to be changed, it contains the first ten amendments that are important and vital to our lives. Though there are two that are the most important to the people and ensure their safety. The second amendment is one of the important amendments, because this is where people have the right to have gun with them at all times. This right has been debated for years and even today they still are.
In the First amendment, we are guaranteed the freedom of speech, petition, assembly, religion, and press. There is three of these rights that are most important to me which are religion, speech, and assembly. We are guaranteed these rights; however, there is circumstances. First, I feel like religion is an important right because without freedom of religion, the government set religion might not be correct and would lead others away from the truth.
Chapter 4 of the book We the People talks about Civil Liberties, this chapter mainly talks about the Rights that were placed in the Constitution (not in the Bill of Rights), it also talks about the Bill of Rights and it describes the rights protected by the Bill of Rights. It also talks about specific rights that work close together with the Bill of Rights and Amendments rights. One of the first Amendments that is described in great detail is Freedom of Speech and Religion. The first Amendment protects US citizens right to talk about almost any topic in the United States. I said almost any topic because there are some forms of speech that aren’t protected by the First Amendment (these forms of speech can be limited or prohibited), some of the forms of speech that aren’t protected by the First Amendment are Fighting Words and Hate Speech, Student Speech, Libel and Slander speech.
