It is important to keep parents informed of what their children are learning and doing. This requires clear and effective communication from the teacher. As a teacher, there are many things that I can do to ensure that parents are actively involved in what their child is learning, regardless of their language proficiency or culture. The program I intend on implementing would require: parents to read to their children, Q&A session with parents and teachers, and after school involvement from parents. Children whose parents read to them have a higher literacy rate. Parents who read to children can be helpful especially when parents are learning the language too. Repetition and practice are good for those trying to learn a new language. This technique can also strengthen the bond a parent has with a child. When parents are aware of what their child is doing it increases their relationship strength. When working with parents with limited communication skill, it is important to be open minded and understand that they may not understand everything their child is working on in their learning. This is one reason I would like to establish a Q&A for parents. This meeting would take place once a month and parents could come to the meetings or for those who can make it they can email me questions. These meeting would be recorded so that parents who may work or be busy can still participate and stay knowledgeable about what their children are working on. This is also a great way for parents to get to know other parents and stay connected. When parents are more active in their children’s lives, know what they are doing, and know who they are hanging out with, it prevents children from getting into trouble or hanging out with the wrong
