1- Predictors of Talent

Definition of talent: A quality that someone has or someone who has a natural ability to be good at something that is developed through training. It is what makes someone successful in their sport.

Four different types of talent
Uni-dimensional: This is where an athlete has talent in just 1 activity. The athlete is limited in potential as they have few skills to transfer. For example they may be able to compete in the 100m. This means they are limited and have few skills that can be used in other sporting events. For example, a 100m runner may not be able to run a marathon or do any activities involving long distance.

These types of skills are inherited. Skills are developed through practice and training. Coaches can analyse sport skills by identifying the motor abilities essential for sport performance. Athletes with a high experience will usually have better motor skills than athletes who have a lower level of experience. Skills are developed through time and effort.

Perceptual skills includes things such as the ability to read the game and making changes to your game. Understanding the game is very important and athletes will eventually need to make changes with their techniques and tactics in order to win. For example in badminton, if you are losing you may need to change your game, by maybe making your opponent work harder by moving them around a lot. This involves thinking of different shots to do. The first step could be learning basic movement skills toward learning sport specific skills for athletic performance. Understanding these basic movements helps coaches make good training decisions as well as for fitness. For example in badminton, before learning how to actually hit the shuttle, you can learn the movement/basic skills first and then you can build up from there. If you are new at the sport and just go straight to hitting the shuttle, you won't be learning anything.
Technical and tactical skills are learned by general game play. In sport, this also applies to tactics, athletes have to make decisions quickly and plan how they are going to play their game in order to win. A technique is how well a skill is performed, for example, how accurate an athlete can serve a ball in tennis or how well an athlete can control the ball in football. A tactic is the action carefully planned to achieve and it is a plan that is made before playing a game. For example, in football for attacking, the tactic would be the plan to break down the defence to score a
