Activity 3.5 – Capstone: History of UPS, Mission and Vision The purpose of the paper is to show the chronological steps that took UPS from inception to the global entity that it is today. The information was retrieve from UPS’s website and various online articles. The purpose is to give a general overview of UPS’s history, the mission and vision.

History In 1907 James E. Casey, started the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington. The company made deliveries on foot at first then turned to bicycles for longer trips. Automobiles were introduced a few years later, some six years before the United States Parcel Service transportation system would be established. In 1922 UPS became a "Common Carrier" service which incorporated many features of a retail store delivery service. These features were not offered by any other carrier at that time. In 1924 UPS debuted the first ever conveyor belt system to handle its packages. By 1927, UPS had expanded to all the major cities on the Pacific Coast and kept expanding East by 1930. UPS had moved its headquarters from Seattle to California, New York, then to Atlanta. Jim Casey retired from active management in the 1960s and Charlie Soderstrom took over the leadership of the company. In 1966, Jim Casey began to focus on the welfare of children by establishing a Foundation for Foster Care. Jim Casey passed away in 1983. His estate provided additional resources for the Annie E. United Parcel Service seeks to be the leader in all areas of operation in the package and delivery service. UPS has several subsidiaries which all have their own way of adhering to UPS’s mission statement. As in Mail Innovations which operates a mail service providing their customer an effective way of delivering their mail. UPS Air Cargo is another subsidiary that transports cargo worldwide. UPS Capital Corporation's focuses on the financial needs of its customers within the supply chain, while its Customer Solutions is a consulting service that offers direction and guidance to company and governmental bodies.
