The features of a willing and culturally procured customer base is seen in the many outlets of LUSH or ‘Lushies’, as they call themselves. Coined first in, “TALES OF A LUSHIE” (a blog on tumblr.), the term was used by the company to give a name to a LUSH employee that could give other customer bloggers advice on what to buy or how to use specific LUSH products. Over time, a ‘Lushie’ wasn’t just applied to employees of the cosmetic company any longer, but to a wide base of consumers whom extensively shop at LUSH for all their beauty needs. As a popular reference for the ever-evolving unofficial language of socialized terminology, Urban Dictionary’s entry of ‘lushie’ defined a new evolution to social life in which demonstrates the power LUSH has over its customer base, and further spread their literal word. Siphoning off these unpaid ‘Lushies’ social influence, a form of free advertisement is born to promote the product. I admit to having succumbed to the company’s will via a non-employee ‘Lushie’, who recommended Herbalism to me earlier on in the year. In this political effort, LUSH has teamed up with another fashion designer company; Vivian Westwood, joining forces “against the root causes of global poverty, inequality and injustice”(WoW). The ‘war’ is to “stop the secretly negotiated EU-US trade deal, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).” (WoW). For said rally against the TTIP, LUSH launched a limited edition Dirty Deal Showder powder in September of this year. The Product comes in a box designed by Vivian Westwood herself, and signified to the purchasers (Lushies) that they had contributed in funding the WoW foundation against TTIP. Therefore, while still trying to promote a good cause, LUSH is strategically using its products to be carried on through political action, and it is the political war that allows specially made products to come into existence for the Lushies purchase. The WoW effort itself is a politically employed move to save itself from erasure, as the TTIP free trade agreement threatens to “remove trade barriers” and “bureaucratic hurdles” on customs duties, market access and international regulations (European Commission).
