In the novels ‘Don’t call me Ishmael’ and ‘The pain, My mother, Sir Tiffy, Cyber boy & Me’ the two main characters are represented by the use of figurative language. The author Michael Bauer used a male and female protagonist to illustrate some of the differences between their personalities. Maggie, the main character in ‘The pain & Me’ is represented as an aggressive and selfish person who had hardship in her life and is struggling to deal with it however towards the end of the book she becomes less judgemental and has a better outlook on life. Bauer uses capitalisation and hyperbole to highlight these traits. In the book ‘Don’t call me Ishmael’ the main character Ishmael is a quiet person who is lacking self-confidence however finds his voice
The figurative language in the third section of Inside Out and Back Again gives us a deeper understanding of the book. It shows a look into Ha’s thought process, how uncomfortable she is in America, and how she prefers Vietnam to the US. The first example of figurative language is on page 140, where Ha spells her teacher's name; MiSSS SSScot. She is purposely misspelling her teacher's name to exaggerate the “S”. It gives us a deeper look into Ha’s understanding of English, and her thought process when coming to it.
Brian Doyle in his text Joyas Voladoras he uses vivid and clear imagery, repetition, comparison, syntax and effortless diction to show his purpose which is it does not matter the size of a heart but its ability to live life to its fullest and hopeful that each day will be good. In the first paragraph he repeats the words “ A hummingbird’s heart is,” this shows the reader how the hummingbird’s heart is. “ not soon” this is in the second paragraph and it describes the urgency of the want. “You” is repeated to show the timeline and how it is similar to the human life. “So much held in heart in a,” this is used to describe all the little precious moments at the end of our lives.

In Brian Doyle’s “Joyas Voladoras”, he explores his sentiments toward those unseeable properties. Through his work, Doyle is telling his audience to not close off their hearts to the things in life that make it worth it, even if it brings pain and sorrow. Doyle crafts his discussion and expands it to convey this message about the properties of the heart that cannot be weighed or measured through his use of distinct changes in tone using specific diction, his changes in point of view, and use of multiple extended metaphors.
Sydney Goss AP LAnguage Composition Hill Period 3 25 August 2015 Analysis of “Joyas Voladoras” In the passage "Joyas Voladoras," the author, Brian Doyle, takes an intriguing approach on the topic of hearts. While only slightly over two pages, the author uses metaphors in the essay to perfectly capture and discuss the life humans live, the reality of the human heart and the pain of love. With comparisons such as the hummingbird and turtle heartbeat speed, Doyle explains that there are various ways to live a life. Doyle also stresses the fact that human life is invaluable throughout the writing piece.
In the poem “To be of Use” Marge Piercy uses figurative language to show the readers how she feels about hardworks. The figurative language helps compare the water buffalo to the hard workers. In line 9 and 10, Piercy uses a simile when she says “Who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience/ who strain in the mud and muck to move things forward.” By comparing the water buffalo to hard workers it shows that when hard workers have to push through tough obstacles or things that might prevent them from getting the job done, they still find a way to overcome the problem and finish the job. In addition, Piercy uses metaphors to explain how hard they work.

The author’s purpose in the text Lost in the Kitchen is to inform and entertain the reader. The author, Dave Barry, tries to inform the audience about how men are not helpful when it comes to cooking in the kitchen. Similarly, Barry tries to also entertain the audience by including humor; humor that I found to be quite boring and crude. In a sense, Barry’s jokes are almost told as if he is just writing every little thing that pops into his mind. All throughout the text, Barry’s humor tries to provide a comical insight into how men act when in the kitchen.
