In many of Tim Burton’s films, he uses lighting to reveal cheerfulness or gloominess. In Edward Scissorhands, the town is buoyant and bright. This makes it seem as if the town is blissful and jubilant, but the reality is that the townsfolk are cruel and unkind to each other. The people in the town are hateful and all the women do is gossip about each other. Tim Burton uses dark and low key lighting for Edward’s mansion. This makes Edward seem like a bad guy, but he is kind and harmless. Another example of this low key lighting is the factory in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Burton uses shadowy and dark lighting to unveil the factory. The lighting would want the audience to think that the factory is boring and dull, but it is really astonishing
