Lunch time is supposed to a time when students can settle down and enjoy their lunch that they either bought or brought. Although this is the case, most students receive healthy lunches that they do not want to eat, mostly just throwing it away. Schools should sell students more variety for lunch, instead of forcing healthy choices on them. As a matter of fact, school lunches having more variety and more snacks that students would enjoy does not change student’s risk of being overweight or obese. As stated by the book School Lunches: Healthy Choices vs. Crowd Pleasers: “A 2012 study of 19,000 fifth to ninth graders in 1000 schools looked at whether selling junk food [or more varieties] increased the likelihood of students being overweight or obese. Researchers found no significant evidence that this was true.” This is important because it shows that there is not a huge need for forced nutritious lunches at schools and giving a variety of foods would not change the students. As stated by the book School Lunches: Healthy Choices vs. Crowd Pleasers: “School lunches now have less protein and carbohydrates and more fruits and vegetables. Students in High Schools receive at least 750 calories but no more than 850 calories in their lunches every day. Middle Schools receive 700 calories, and Elementary Schools receive 650 calories per lunch. This is significant because with this low amount of calories, proteins and carbohydrates, students will leave the cafeteria still hungry. This can be a problem because, as said before by many sources, being hungry can affect a student’s academic performance. Their grades may decrease on tests or they may not participate in class as much.
