The marketing of goods can be broken down between the consumers’ needs and wants. Verizon Wireless provides a service that is needed for mobile telecommunication. Yet, Fitbit provides a wanted service for people that are focused on improving their health. Although marketing is important because it provides information to the consumer, one must determine if marketing tactics are ethical due to the effects marketing can have on consumer behavior. A company that fulfills a need is Verizon Wireless. Their dependable service and low price is what attracts many people. According to Fitbit (2016), the Fitbit device will track and record activity and caloric intake. The device then allows the user to select weight loss and fitness plans to promote a healthy lifestyle. Their primary marketing tool is the free application that is available for download on smartphones. The application is wanted because it shows the user how many calories are eaten as well as tracking run or walk activities. The user becomes accustomed to using the application; however, carrying around a bulky smartphone while being active is not desirable. Therefore, the free application creates a need for the Fitbit device that conveniently fits on the wrist. Clearly, Fitbit is in the business of promoting a healthy lifestyle.
