When I was younger, I was always hesitant to say that I wanted to go into the veterinary field because I thought that meant I only had the option to become a veterinarian, but that isn’t the case anymore. Now that I know that veterinary medicine has a broad career field, and after researching important career information (work environment, skills required, the level of education needed, salary, and job outlook), I think that being a veterinary technician/technologist is the right career choice for me.
Education and certain skills are rather important when training to work as a veterinary technician/technologist. The classes that someone would need to take for this career in high school are usually biology and other sciences, and math, while the college education needed for this job is different, depending on the job title desired. The salary for this job is about $15.29 per hour or $31,800 per year. This may not seem like much, but the jobs for this career are increasing rapidly; there’s been about a 19% job growth in the past few years. In Ohio there are around 100 new jobs plus the few thousand possible jobs that could open at any time. Despite this, there are possible costs such as veterinary equipment, software, and licensing with, of course, the addition of college fees. There are also a few cons to this job such as: increased chances of illness/injury, sporadic work schedule (having to work on weekends, holidays, etc.), the job is physically/emotionally demanding, and possible high stress level. However there are many pros like: the good job outlook, the overall work (helping and working with animals), local job/no travel necessary, varied jobs, and only a basic skill level
