Women are victimized by the pages of magazines. Magazines are crammed with rules and guidelines women feel as though they need to follow in order to function in society. These pages lead women to idolize the perfect image, and how one must change herself to fit into the standards that have been set by the media. Take next week’s edition of Ok! USA edition for example. On the front cover there are three words that they categorize the women in the magazine as: sexy, married, and pregnant. The magazine has excessive amounts of articles with people’s idols being sexy and getting married and other’s with baby bumps to showcase to women that those are the kinds of things they should want in life. Ok! had an article which featured cosmetic products on how to do one’s makeup like the celebrities. On this page there were pictures of Inglot’s eyeshadow and Splat hair dye. Captioned to the side of these products were little sayings such as, “...surround lids with a turquoise shadow like the one makeup pro Lusine Galadijian chose for Victoria Justice,” and “Vibrant pink hair streaks make quite the statement-and this kit makes getting them with one box a snap.” Doesn’t that sound like they are trying to sell those products rather than give tips on how to do one’s makeup? To take it one step further, below both of these captions are the companies name, the products name, the price of each cosmetic tool, and a website that one can go to buy the products used in this article. This ‘article’ isn’t an article at all. It is just an advertisement disguised as one. Splat hair dye actually was a real advertisement featured earlier in the magazine, so it makes one wonder if it was just featured in that article because they are a sponsor to the magazine.
