Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands on March 30, 1853. Throughout his life, Vincent had a hard time dealing with his mental illness and poverty. He died at the age of 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot. Vincent was basically unknown and only sold one painting of his in the entirety of his life. He was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who greatly impacted the 20th-century art movement. His work was memorable for its brush strokes, vivid use of colors, the emotions within the artworks, and his artworks overall appearance and beauty. In 1886, he moves in with his brother, Theo in Paris and experiments with different styles of artwork. He goes to cafes with other painters, like Gauguin, which he becomes close friends with. At the end of his friendship with Gauguin, he suffers from mental issues and cuts off part of his left earlobe. Many think he cut off his entire left ear, although it was only the earlobe. He starts having many mental breakdowns, therefore he thinks it is a good idea to enter himself into the Saint Paul mental asylum at Saint Remy. He leaves there at the beginning of 1890. In his last two months, he paints with a lot of energy producing more than 80 paintings. Vincent dies on July 29, 1890. He made over 900 paintings and 1100 drawings and sketches but only sold one painting during his lifetime. He left most of his work to his brother, Theo. In Vincents 37 years he lived in four countries and more than twenty cities. He lived in most of the cities for only two years at a time, sometimes going back to live in the same ones again.
