Vincent Van Gogh Who is Vincent Van Gogh? Van Gogh inspired upcoming artists, struggled with a mental illness and self-harm, plus had tons of life experiences to encourage him to become an artist. Vincent Van Gogh was an artist in the 1800’s. He wasn’t very popular until after his death in 1890. Van Gogh created about 900 paintings in his lifetime. Out of all of those paintings, he only sold one. The painting he sold was “The Red Vineyard.” Van Gogh’s artwork made other people today to start creating art themselves. He started a trend of painting sunflowers on your painting. He started it with his “Sunflowers” painting. Mental Illness Van Gogh had a serious mental illness. One day he couldn’t take it anymore and he tried to shoot himself. He shot himself in the stomach. The bullet missed a vital organ, which he was aiming for, and it went right through him. He made it back home and the next day his brother found him bleeding out and almost out of blood. Theo rushed him to the hospital. About 2 days later he died in his brother's arms. Nobody found the gun after he shot himself so they thought someone else had shot him. While Van Gogh was in the hospital he told everyone that he had shot himself.
