Plagued by violence, the United States constantly suffers through perpetual brutalities.
As one of the leading causes of death, it generates more than 1.6 million casualties worldwide every year. Acts of violence are often highly publicized, which has led citizens to believe that the nation’s violence problem is getting progressively worse. However, since the 1990s crime and death rates due to violence have decreased. In the 1990s violence was at its peak, primarily due to crimes committed by youth under the age of twenty, driven by the access they had to handguns. In the United States, one out of three women are abused or assaulted by their husband or partner. Most women consider domestic abuse to be the most frequent form of violence. However, since domestic violence is primarily a crime against women, many men are not aware of its frequency. Nonetheless, globally and nationally, dating and spousal abuse is the most common type of violence. Domestic abuse develops when a spouse or partner wants to control and maintain control and dominance over the other person involved in the relationship. Abusive relationships can sometimes even involve rape. Seventy-six percent of rapes are committed by the victim’s boyfriend or husband. Most people and law enforcement in America are told that this number is lower and that rapes committed by strangers are more frequent than those committed by an intimate. This is because most rapes committed by a loved one are hidden by the victim in order to protect the culprit. Only twenty-four percent of women raped by a husband or boyfriend report it to the police whereas forty-one percent of rapes committed by strangers are reported. In the United States, citizens who have not experienced dating or spousal violence believe that it is less of a threat than other types of violence. This is usually because the most common type of abuse is emotional abuse. Society regularly ignores emotional abuse because it does not physically harm someone. However, emotional abuse generally leads to physical abuse and sometimes rape, especially in intimate
