Over time, entertainment has had an impact on American sSociety. Technology has made it easier for children and young adults to be influenced by the ideas of horrific and violent actions. They have allowed kids to believe things that may or may not be true. Most involve murders and spiritual activity. Entertainment has become more violent over the years and affected our society more throughwith television, books and video games. Today, television is the most violent entertainment used. Directors use the theme of a “good guy” and a “bad guy” to better evaluate the situations in the movie or show. They can contain vulgar language and dark graphics. Some video games are so graphic that they can cause nightmares or even make the child act out. Some people may disagree with this idea because kids know games are not real. Some also believe that video game restrictions can prevent their children from seeing these brutal visuals. Gallagher states, “Parental controls are also built into all current-generation game consoles, enabling parents to block video games they do not want their children to play. This ensures that parents’ standards are enforced, even when they are not at home.” While parental controls can limit the violence, this doesn’t always stop a kid from experiencing these games. Kids can get games from their friends or even wait until they are older to buy the games themselves. Carey states, “Playing the games can and does stir hostile urges and mildly aggressive behavior in the short term.” There has been research on video games and their effect on the players. A New York Times article states, “In one recent study, Christopher Barlett, a psychologist at Iowa State University, led a research team that had 47 undergraduates play ‘Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance’ for 15 minutes. Afterward, the team took various measures of arousal, both physical and psychological” (Carey). Although there are reasons why video games may not cause violence in society, there is evidence of it.
