Virtual Safety vs. Infringement of a Social Right
Bullying has affected many individuals in different social environments. Currently, the use of technological devices and networks offered people entertainment and communication development. On the other hand, Internet extended bullying to another dimension and range level, which caused the digital bullying. Also known as cyberbullying, it impacted and disrupted especially the educational environment which, consequently, prejudiced students, officers and teachers. Moreover, this modern issue questioned the First Amendment of American Constitution on the freedom of speech’s limitations, provoking pupils and parents to worry about the establishment and protection of Constitution’s respective social right. Due to the technological huge virtual influence, some students utilized texting, emails and social media in order to perform acts of violence which were not necessarily physical or direct. Cyberbullying violated civil rights of individuals. A survey graph created by Sameer Hinduja in 2010, portrayed that, similar to bullying, cyberbullying occurred more frequently among students aged ten to eighteen years old (Document A). However, it could be also practiced in the corporate environment, in the family, between neighbors, friends or other environments, affecting a distinct age range. Those who did not consider cyberbullying as a big problem showed that 75% of teen girls and 83% of teen boys have never been the targets of cyberbullying (Document A).
