Cyberbullying In May 2008 CQ Researcher addressed the topic of Cyberbullying. Two Directors expressed their argument on this subject supported by evidence of their claim. They both answered the question “Should schools be able to regulate off-campus cyberbullying?”. Nancy Willard, Executive Director of Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use, is in favor for school officials intervening in off-campus cyberbullying . Opposing is Legal Director of American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, Witod J Walczak (Billittery). These are my findings when analyzing these two essays. Nancy Willard claims that school officials should be able to intervene or respond to off-campus speech. She says that even though cyberbullying is done outside of school it interferes with the time spent in school. The bullying follows the victim to school although it is done through social media. This causes students to skip classes and due to this, fail and even become suicidal. Willard states that “victims of bullying are are eight times more likely than other students to report bringing a weapon to school”. Walczak says “school officials legally have no authority over students out-of-school speech and they know it”. The article “Cyberbullying” says “First amendment rights provide limited guidance to educators grappling with the emerging world of cyber communication, especially transmissions originating off grounds.” (Billitteri). This article proved the point that Walczak made. “Lawmakers are struggling with tough questions about how to regulate digital media and the internet”(Clemmitt).
