The movie “Rear Window” by Hitchcock is a movie that explores the theme of voyeurism in our society. The movie is filmed in 1954, in Greenwich Village, New York. The movie shows differences in the types of scenery that you would see in someone's everyday life style. Shots from the movie show the everyday aspects of a person who looks to see what's going on in their community, rather than focusing on themselves. Hitchcock, the director of the movie tries to take the viewers into a place of their own responses. Although there is sound, including diegetic and nondiegetic sounds. Diegetic sounds are the visible sounds on the screen implied by the present action in the film. Non-diegetic sound is used for the mood and also for dramatic effects. Hitchcock tries to make the viewer feel and understand what's going on throughout the movie. The opening scene jumps right into the characters and an opening wide view shot of the community. The main character L.B. Jefferies is whose ears and eyes we see through at every point in the movie. Although there are several characters throughout the movie, he's the eyes for the viewer. The movie takes place in Greenwich Village, New York. the scene opens with panning left to right with tilt down into the L.B. Jefferies window. L.B. Jefferies a man with positive attitude, observing and open-minded. He's a photographer, with photos of the war or a woman named Lisa. He finds her attractive but has a negative picture of her on his wall symbolizing negative feelings he may have toward her. Lisa is in a relationship with Jefferies and is calm and looks to be a very beautiful woman. She's a fashion model and has altercations with Ms.Torso due to jealousy. Ms.Torso is a the woman who always stretching provocatively and is also pretty. The couple upward from Ms.Torsos apartment is the couple that sleeps outside their own house, with an open lifestyle to their community. These characters are all introduced in the opening scene. Although there's no dialogue, the viewer can see the community and who's who throughout the movie. Hitchcock’s goal throughout the movie is to get the viewer to see what's going on without a dialogue. He brings so many different angles and lighting into the scene to help. Lighting styles he brings are dim or bright lighting. For example, when the scene first started off L.B. Jefferies had more of a dim lighting to show he must have been sick while Ms.Torsos lighting was more bright. The lighting helps the viewer find the exact mood of what's going on.
