After listening to the VPR interview with writer and journalist Lynn Truss on proper punctuation, I felt I should read her book and work on my grammar skills. I do agree with Mrs. Truss that punctuation is very important in writing and could have a profound effect on how the reader interpret what the writer is trying to say. It is also one of the most important aspects of written English although at times punctuation could be overlooked and taken lightly. When we use the wrong punctuation or no punctuation at all, it can mislead the reader of the true meaning of what the writer intended to say. I liked her idea of thinking about what the sentence would mean if one did or did not use comma’s or colon’s. These are used to show us where to take a pause. When reading out load punctuation can play a major roll in how the reading is interpreted and how we sound reading. Punctuation is one of our features in English writing that gives our written words meaning. We can use two of the same words in different sentences and they will mean something completely different because of the choice to use the period (or full stop) or the question mark. Lynn Truss used several different examples to get her point across that I thought was helpful and interesting.

It is her natural instinct to correct the improper punctuation. I thought it was funny when she talked about her own book going through editing and the editor sent the book back for her to correct things she thought she was for sure of. She had two different editors give her two different opinions. This was a great example of how there are many different opinions out there about what is correct grammar and punctuation. After listening to this interview, I do believe I will think of punctuation
