We all know the retail leader for the last several decades has been Wal-Mart. During the sixty's, Mr. Sam Walton open the very first Wal-Mart. With a vision of selling their products cheaper than the competitor. At first, business was shaky at best. However, today the Walton family is worth an estimated 130 billion dollars.

Walmart is undoubtedly an American institution, yet each Walmart store feels like its own little country. Walmart seems to have its own laws and customs and the people who shop their on a regular basis appear almost primitive in their behavior as they go about raiding the store’s shelves and wrestling with fellow customers for discount flat screen televisions and bulk packages of two-ply toilet paper.

I strongly agree with the author’s statement that Wal-Mart should not be allowed to build a new store in downtown Los Angeles for the following reasons: the small businesses would be forced to close down and more importantly, the wages that Wal-Mart pays are very low. I am convinced that in the present economic situation, small businesses can hardly survive from financial prices. More and more shops close their doors because of the “fierce” competition. Besides being a cause of the lessoning of the competition, the new Wal-Mart store would be an obstacle to small businesses that are trying to thrive. It is known that Wal-Mart is one of the most popular companies in the U.S.
Walmart is a business that offers low prices by paying their associates a wage that is based on their value to the company’s success. Despite that the company does not pay a living wage like most businesses they allow the market to determine or give a rough estimate to the value of the work an employee does for the company based on their human capital and experience.
