Walter Elias Disney, otherwise known as the famous Walt Disney, was a man with a great imagination, and even greater aspirations. Walt was born on December 5th of 1901 in the Hermosa sector of Chicago, IL. Even though he was born in Illinois he lived most of his childhood in Marceline, Missouri, where his interest in art and cartoons began to bloom. When Walt was a young boy his neighbor was one of the first to notice his talents, he commissioned Walt to draw him a picture of his horse. Then, in 1911, he moved to Kansas City. Here, he went to high school until dropping out at fifteen to aid the U.S army in France. A year later he returned to Kansas in search of a job as a newspaper cartoonist. The short, “Steamboat Willie,” was the first ever animation to have synchronized sound. It became an instant success and made the character, Mickey Mouse, an instant hit. Seeing the great response he received for sound in animation, he made a whole line of animated shorts called, “Silly Symphonies,” that featured classic characters, such as Donald Duck, Goofy, and Minnie Mouse. After the production of several Silly Symphonies, Walt planned to create another animated piece that would cause a revolution in the world of animation. In December of 1937, Walt released the animated film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” It was the first full-length animated film to exist in the world, the film would later win over five Oscars. The period that followed would be considered Walt’s, ‘Golden Age,’ in which he released several other full-length cartoon films. It wasn’t until 1941 when he was struck with misfortune, there was a strike made by the animators that worked for Disney that all left his company. It wasn’t until the 50’s that Walt was able to release full-length films again. Disney’s next grand success was in 1964 when the movie, “Mary Poppins,” was premiered in Los Angeles. This movie was also another big step forward in the art of film-making as it was the first movie to combine live action with animation. Walt’s next move would be one of the biggest in his career, he went on to create Disneyland, the most renowned theme park in the world.
