What impact do presidents have towards a country as a whole? Warren G. Harding was the 29th president of The United States. He became president on March 4th, 1921 and served a two year term. During his election date Harding promised that as president to restore Pre-World War I “normalcy”. Warren G. Harding died from a heart attack and due to his death in office, he was not able accomplish many things. Because he was not able to do much as president, he has been considered as one of the worst presidents in the country. Domestic issues that occurred during his presidency are issues with the people in office who defrauded the government, the Fordney-McCumber Tariff bill, the Immigration Act and Revenue Act of 1921. Harding was surrounded by a group of cheats who were later charged with defrauding the government. Harding knew of these cheats limitations, but did not get rid of them because he enjoyed smoking and playing poker with them. He was known as someone who could not say “no” to their friends. Later on, the Fordney-McCumber Tariff bill was signed. “In the decade after the end of the first World War, the United States continued to embrace the high tariffs that had characterized its trade policy since the Civil War” (Protectionism in the Interwar Period). This was to provide protection for farmers whose war time markets in Europe were disappearing. One downfall of his act is that it made it difficult for European nations to export to the United States. Also, the Immigration Act was formed in 1921 and it made it more difficult for immigrants from southern and east Europe to enter the country. Harding had his ways in handling different crisis in events during his presidency. Some were successful while some were not so great. An example of a major crisis was that Harding surrounded himself with people who tried to cheat and defrauded the government. They were his friends, which was why he did not act much about it. “He survived impeachment attempts by Congress and two indictments for defrauding the government in the disposal of alien property confiscated by his own office from German nations” (Warren G. Harding: Domestic Affairs). Many believed that during Harding’s role as a president, he was not very intelligent. Issues during his presidency were that the society was tired of all the changes and federal government steadily growing power. Warren G.
