How far would you go for something you believe in. John Brown is born into a religious family in Torrington, Connecticut in 1800. He is a Calvinists who believes God choose him to end slavery. John Brown met up with Harriet Tubman and other abolitionists in the Underground Railroad. On October 16, 1859, Brown led 21 followers, 5 black men and 16 white men on a raid at Harper’s Ferry in Virginia. Brown seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry intending to give the slaves weapons to attack, but the slaves did not follow him. Although John Brown believes that violence is the only answer to end slavery, he risks his life to save slaves: therefore John Brown is not guilty of treason, insurrection, and murder.

Some say John Brown made the choice during the attack to spare the life of two people a wife and a teenage son which is all correct. He did wound 9 people and killed 5 other innocent people. Saving two lives would not change the fact that he is responsible for the death of 5 innocent citizens. Murder is a crime and violence is never the answer. Brown wants a better life for slaves, but he has no serious attention for the people he physically injured in the process of creating an improved life for them. Brown knew he was not going to get a peaceful answer, and knew that people were going to die. “No matter how bad the crime of slavery is killing innocent people if they get in the way, or simply killing in general is no way to solve a problem.”( John Brown guilty or innocent slavery 2 ). John Brown says his mission is to free the slaves, but he kills one African American during the raid. “John Brown kills a black man who was either just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or he was the gate guard for the storehouse. He murders without a second thought”.
