The Iraq War was arguably one of the most controversial wars in history. After years of tensions between the United States and Iraq, United States led a direct invasion in Iraq on March 2003, sparking the beginning of the Iraq War. One of the main reason for invading Iraq was due to the belief of the Bush Administration that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. However, inspections were conducted and a lack of evidence of weapons of mass destruction was found. Yet, United States proceeded to go to war in Iraq due to the war on terrorism concept. United States was able to overthrow Saddam Hussein and fighting ceased during April. However, the victory was short lived due the further entanglements and the aftermath of the Iraq War. The Iraq War divert United States’ attention away from the Afghanistan War. allowing more terrorists to regroup. To begin, there was no imminent or direct attack on United States to initiate a war on Iraq. However, the aftermath of the September 11 attacks raised concerns regarding whether Iraq still possessed weapons of mass destruction, leading to the The Bush Administration’s claim that Iraq still possessed of such weapons, which would pose a severe threat to United States (Benson). However, it was later found that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction as United Nations weapons inspection teams dismantled all of Iraq’s major weapons factories and destroyed nearly all of Iraq’s chemical and biological weapons (Scowcroft).
