Wayne Gretzky: The Great One Kolten Saucerman-ent | Period:5 “He shoots, he scores!” Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time because of the effort he puts into making sure he has had enough time, deliberate practice, and a good mindset for his games. He tries as hard as he can to make sure he is ahead of everyone, especially in the game. He is now 55 years old and has an appearance in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Geoff Colvin, senior editor for Fortune Magazine, wrote an article titled “What it Takes to be Great” and in that article he brings up the 10,000 hour rule. The 10,000 hour rule was made by scientists that said that you need at least 10,000 hours of experience to become great. Well, Gretzky has played 20 seasons of hockey. That is approximately 175,200 hours of experience or 17.52 times for than the recommended time, all spent playing hockey. The way you get that much practice is by playing basically you’re whole life. During Gretzky’s hockey career, he invented his own “2-second advantage” strategy. It involves always being ahead of the other team. Gretzky once said, “I skate where the puck is going to be, not where it has been”. This means that he is ahead everyone and he is getting ready to set up a play before the other team even realizes it. Gretzky also improved his skills by making videos to help others which made him have to think about everything you have to do, how to do them, and even when to do them which basically forced him to teach himself. During his games, he made an average of 1 goal in each game.
