In the book Wednesday Wars a character that helps Holling grow is his father, Mr. Hoodhood. People always question themselves, they are always trying to perfect everything they do. Holling Hoodhood is just an average boy that goes to the wildest school, Camillo Junior High. Holling is about 13. he lives the most perfect life with the perfect house. The Shelton gang terrorized the area of Fairfield Il., in Wayne County, during the prohibition era. During the prohibition the Shelton’s got into bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, facts about the organization, and how it all ended in 1945. During the prohibition, they bootlegged their own moonshine and others all over Wayne County. While they were bootlegging and making alcohol, they made a lot of rivals with other bootleggers in the area. Beside just bootlegging they also had casinos for people to gamble at all over southern IL.
Holling Hoodhood is a seventh grader in 1967. In his school, the student body is largely divided between Catholics and Jews, and every Wednesday both groups go to their separate churches for religious classes. Holling, a Presbyterian, is forced to remain at class with his teacher, Mrs. Baker. Initially, Holling is convinced that Mrs. Baker resents him for this. This suspicion is compounded when she begins having him read Shakespeare.
Victor M. Rios was born in Mexico. When he was two years old he immigrated with his mother to Oakland, California. He went through a tough childhood and he and his mother moved several times throughout poor neighborhoods such as West Oakland, The Fruitvale District, and Elmhurst. As a result of growing up in this kind of environments he was forced to be part of Latino East Oakland gangs. Stealing cars, selling drugs, getting into street fights and having problems with police was all he would do until he was 15 years old.
Another way he persuades the audience is he proves
When it comes to the phrase “sharing is caring”, not too many business leaders followed it. Ironically, there were a few stingy industrialists who happened to have a generous heart. John D. Rockefeller, J.P.Morgan, and Andrew Carnegie are a few examples of individuals known for “money-hogging” in the 19th century. Although a couple of these robber barons started off as people who did not give back to their community, they managed to become captains of industry in the end. What are robber barons and captains of industry?
Throughout the course of the book many people realize the many qualities that compose the ever great Morris. Although there are three main and most remarkable qualities that stand out. Morris possesses the courage, responsibility, and determination it takes to get through difficult challenges. If Morris had never been courageous, he would have never taken the
In this quote, Holling speaks about how Mrs. Baker gave him an exceedingly complicated sentence to diagram, while the other students received fairly simple sentences. The sentence that he was given seemed to be so long and so complex that it appeared that even the man “who wrote it couldn’t diagram it,” which displays that the sentence is clearly very intricate. This quote is definitely a distinct reason why Holling might assume Mrs. Baker hates him. Since Mrs. Baker provided a much more complex sentence to him than she did for the rest of class, that shows that Mrs. Baker wants to almost “torture” Holling.
The 1920’s in America is often considered as “The Roaring Twenties. World War I was over, women got suffrage, fashion changed immensely, prohibition was put into place, and jazz filled the air. The Roaring ‘20s was a decade of play and prosperity. Unemployment was low and Americans were better off financially. After World War I, America wanted to return to normal.
He is full of humility and loyalty, a virtue that is required to be exemplified by the
I think that the fact that mob mentality is a recurring theme in these books just shows how intense the atmosphere is in the south. The stereotypical Southerner hates everyone (stereotypical southerner being someone who is involved in the KKK), in fact the only people the KKK likes are WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, due to the fact that the South was originally settled by those types of people). That hatred is the fuel for the mob mentality in the south. There is so much hatred, which means there is a large mob mentality. I think it is also important to note that it was not only African-Americans who were segregated, but people of any color.
At the end of the story, the narrator seems to reveal to us the true power of Sonny and the music that he plays. Sonny was a drug addict. He was addicted with heroin long before his mother died and “wanted to leave Harlem so bad .. to get away from drugs” (272). Sonny saw jazz as a medium for liberation of his sufferings but narrator had a very little respect of jazz musicians and urged his brother to re-think his decision for the sake of his future. While most part of the story only talks about the crazy and wild parts of sonny’s nature as he was trying his best “to get out of Harlem” (264) we wasn’t given any clue about his musical talent prior to the end of the story, “you got a real musician in your family” (272).
“The Fall of the House of Usher,” a gothic fiction short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, is pervaded by multiple examples of post-structuralist philosopher Jacques Derrida’s philosophy of trace. A close examination of the narrative reveals a distinct trace between incestual conception and the current condition of the Usher siblings through the physical and mental hinders which oppress them; a relationship between the occupants of the Usher estate and the trace of themselves which they inflict on the outside of it; and the traces of the author’s personal life within the storyline through the motif of live entombment. Articulated by philosopher Jacques Derrida, the philosophy of trace identifies the relationship between the absent and the presence
Sometimes being alone can be beneficial for some in small doses, however constant loneliness can annihilate a person. Edgar Allen Poe explores how isolation strengthens internal fear which leads to the metal break through “The Fall of the house of Usher.” The narrator's experiences are explained in great detail along with Poe dropping hints at what is to come throughout the story. He explains the extreme isolation of the Usher’s in order to convey the impact has on the body and mind. Poe uses the reader’s five senses and multiple connections in the short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” to manifest how social confinement bolsters internal fear which leads to the psychological break down on a person.
