According to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), "weightlifting was one of the events in the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, with the earliest recorded weightlifting event dating back to 776 BC" (IWF, n.d.). The athletes at the ancient Olympics would lift heavy stones, a practice that was seen as a symbol of strength and power. Philostratus, a Greek author from the 3rd century AD, described the weightlifting competitions at the ancient Olympics in his book Gymnastics: "The victors [in weightlifting] are not those who lift the heaviest weights, but those who lift them with the most grace and the greatest ease" (Philostratus, n.d.). …show more content…
